PRODUCTION MONITORING BASICS
What is production monitoring?
Production monitoring gives manufacturing teams a timely view of what is happening on the shop floor—whether equipment is producing, how output compares with plan and where time is being lost.
Why manufacturers use it
The purpose is not to collect data for its own sake. Useful monitoring helps operators and managers spot lost production sooner, understand recurring problems and make decisions using a shared view of performance.
What is commonly monitored
Typical information includes machine status, output, production rate, downtime, order progress and OEE. The exact mix depends on the process and the decisions the plant wants to improve.
Start with operational questions
A good starting point is to define the questions the plant needs answered: Are we running? Are we on pace? What stopped us? Is the loss recurring? Technology should support those questions rather than overwhelm users with unnecessary data.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently asked questions.
Is production monitoring the same as MES?
Not necessarily. Production monitoring is generally more focused on visibility, performance and loss information, while MES can cover a much broader set of manufacturing execution functions.
Can older machines be monitored?
Often yes. The available approach depends on the machine and what reliable production information can be obtained from it.
